Forklifts or lift trucks are powered industrial trucks that are usually used in the moving and lifting of materials for different applications. These types of equipment are normally used in the warehousing, dockside, construction and mining operations.

The forklift could be called by lots of different names, depending on their functions. Several different examples of these names include: fork trucks, trailer loaders, lift trucks and stacker trucks. These equipment are utilized throughout the world, mainly within the manufacturing and warehousing industry.

The very first forklifts made their debut in the mid 19th century and the start of the 20th century, when they were used as part of the construction of the 1906 Pennsylvania railroad. At that time, platform trucks were introduced to help in moving goods. These first platform trucks were battery powered. The trucks regained their popularity during WWI when extreme labor shortages happened because of all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts really arrived on the market to stay.

There are basically 2 main kinds of forklift: those dealing with heavy loads and those which could handle light loads. The light units include: towing tractors, side loaders, hand pallet trucks and walkie starters. These kinds of equipment are meant for handling lighter cargo and they are not suitable for really heavy loads. The specific load capacity of the equipment is posted on the equipment itself and in the owner's guidebook. Some examples of the big truck types include: telescopic handlers, walkie order picking trucks and truck mounted forklifts.

On the market these days, there are various units of forklifts available. Each may offer various load capacities. Most of the time within warehouse applications, the lighter units is used. Bigger units are usually seen within the shipping business. Some models have a tilting mast to make the load capable of bending in order to counteract any slipping.

The majority of units have rear steering wheels. This design aspect is to increase the ease in how the machinery is capable of being maneuvered. Moreover, this steering manner comes in really helpful when operating around corners. These equipment could be unstable due to their changing centers of gravity. It is a very wise idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Yet another kind includes specialized forklifts. These machinery would include explosion proof trucks and articulated counterbalance trucks. The explosion proof trucks are utilized within settings and factories which handle combustible supplies.
