A container forklift is specifically used to load and unload huge, heavy freight containers. They are used to transport freight on and off ships, truck beds and trains. Container forklifts are the most sturdy and biggest kinds of forklifts made. They need to be extremely maneuverable on uneven terrain and have enough torque and power to raise bulky containers safely. Usually, they have heavy-duty diesel engines and big pneumatic tires.
Like all kinds of forklifts, a container forklift utilizes forks to be able to lift the containers. Forks need to be positioned to ensure the load is secure during transport. Various container forklift models are just designed to raise the containers several meters off the ground. Other container handlers use another method for carrying containers to greater heights. A container handler utilizes an apparatus affixed to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machine is counterbalanced with weights to be able to maintain stability.
The main purpose of a container forklift is to lift and transport containers. Standard forklifts do not have enough reach for working in ports. The forks are rated based on the most weight they can handle. The forklift's capabilities should never be exceeded and should be posted prominently in the cockpit.
