Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is provided by large industrial batteries which need to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety procedures must always be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is really important to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is vital for employees working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located close to the charging place. The route to the station must not be blocked and a worker who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Do not permit objects such as matches or lighters to be used when someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be correctly ventilated. The recharging method can release gas. These gases are both toxic and explosive.
